100+ Photos Contributed to the CC Library by Chris Gardiner |
The title says it all - I've made a contribution to the Creative Commons Library. Not entirely sure what that means? Let's talk about Creative Commons.
Creative Commons is a legal license, and with that, is also a searchable library of music, photos, words and video that creative artists can use in their own works. I actually really appreciate Creative Commons, as I use free music in a lot of my videos. So that was a bit of motivation for giving back to the community with my photos.

There are a variety of different creative commons licenses, I chose to release my work under "Attribution" because it is the simplest to use for others which also means I release the most freedoms with it.
What do I get in return? Well to be legally appropriate in your usage of those images, you'd need to provide photo credit aka attribution, to me, the original photographer. That's it.
Most professionals stress the importance of the fact that you shouldn't give your work away for free - and I don't disagree there. But this is different for a few reasons. 1) it's not work - these are all cell phone photos. I had them sitting around anyway, and most of them have never been seen 2) A lot of people steal images off the internet through Facebook, instagram, or google searches - for the people that choose to play by the rules - I want to add more images to the CC library to support them in their project. And at the same time make it easier for the rule breakers to follow the rules by providing more diversity in the content they can use. 3) it's just fun. putting some images out there that can perpetuate their own circulation. Who knows where these photos will end up!?
